All-In All-Together

Community based research navigating the turbulent time and places of political and biological pandemics

We know that the turbulence of our time and places can only be navigated safely when we are ‘all-in’ ‘all-together’ to find creative ways to deploy our resources, resist the ongoing assaults on vulnerable communities, and renew our bonds of connection that sustain us. We invite our growing network(s) of scholars, organizers, community leaders, funders, and students to join a series of virtual events that will provide time/space to deepen our conversations and support one another in our work to strengthen community and university responses to COVID and to racial justice movements.

We are determined to bring our postponed All-In: Co-Creating Knowledge for Justice conference to life in the virtual environment as we move toward an in-person gathering as soon as possible in the 2021-2022 academic year. We are launching this series of virtual events with the immediate publication of short ‘case’ videos that document our work (further releases will be ongoing) and a national dialogue on October 23rd, followed by an ongoing series of focused virtual gatherings that will be topical, methodological, and strategic.

Virtual Events

Revolution, people protest against government, man fighting for rights, silhouettes of hands up in the sky, threat of war

Session 1 – October 23, 2020, 11:00-1:00pm (Pacific time)Event Info

The October 23rd event is a “flipped” style gathering, and registrants are asked to asynchronously view the short video ‘case’ presentations and provide input to the gathering hosts in advance so that our synchronous time together is maximized for fruitful dialogue and engagement for all participants. Subsequent virtual events will enable in-depth explorations of each of the initial ‘cases’ as well as other topics and cases.

We launch our series with an initial set of ‘cases’ meant to help us understand how community-university collaborations are evolving, what community partners need from universities in these times/spaces, what role research can play in the current struggles, what barriers partnerships are facing and what successes have they discovered.

We will explore a collaboration led by formerly incarcerated women, a partnership documenting the impacts of COVID on educational opportunity, a model for integrating university students in strategic research around the sense of connection and belonging of immigrants, and a higher education living/learning community designed for impactful partnerships.Speakers

Ana Antunes, University of Utah

Timothy Eatman, Rutgers University/Newark

Michell Fine, City University of New York (CUNY)

Steve McKay, University of California Santa Cruz

Research Associate (Post-Doctoral Fellow) – Ph.D. Program in Environmental Psychology in New York, New York https://urbanresearchnetwork.org/research-associate-post-doctoral-fellow-ph-d-program-in-environmental-psychology-in-new-york-new-york/ Fri, 06 Sep 2019 12:19:00 +0000 http://urbanresearchnetwork.org/?p=64966 The GC seeks a Post-Doctoral Fellow in Urban Studies, to be housed in the interdisciplinary Environmental Psychology Ph.D. Program. The Marilyn J. Gittell Post-doctoral Fellowship, established in honor of the late Political Science Professor at the GC, is for a social science Ph.D. working on areas that concerned Marilyn Gittell, especially research focused on cities, urban politics, public policy, democratic and civic engagement, social movements, citizenship and governance, and community practices, both domestically and abroad. This is a 1-year fellowship, with the possibility for one 1-year renewal.

The goal of the Gittell Post-Doctoral Fellowship program is to prepare researchers committed to understanding and addressing critical issues in community-engaged research, especially in urban settings. The Fellow will be expected to articulate and advance a research agenda based in the legacy of Marilyn Gittell’s work and help administer activities sponsored by the Marilyn J. Gittell Endowed Chair in Urban Studies. The Fellow serves in a key leadership and programming position within the Gittell Collective (http://gittellcollective.gc.cuny.edu/), based at the Graduate Center, and in the national URBAN research network (https://urbanresearchnetwork.org/).

A Multi-Modal Interrogation of Collaborative Research for Justice https://urbanresearchnetwork.org/a-multi-modal-interrogation-of-collaborative-research-for-justice/ Sat, 09 Mar 2019 06:50:05 +0000 http://urbanresearchnetwork.org/?p=64944 This month’s special issue of Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA) was curated by URBAN, and edited by Ronald David Glass and Mark R. Warren. The issue, Collaborative Research for Justice and Multi-Issue Movement Building: Challenging Discriminatory Policing, School Closures, and Youth Unemployment, is a product of the first national URBAN conference. It reflects the network’s commitment to research for justice that combines rigorous scholarship with the arts to engage both the head and heart so as to deepen and express our social justice values in our scholarship. The powerful cases and provocative essays in the issue are integrated with videos and graphics that bring additional depth and nuance to the topics, and that challenge the hegemony of linear academic prose as the only way to engage with scholarly knowledge.

To watch the videos, visit our YouTube page HERE

Below are the six graphics from the issue. These graphics were created live during the national conference as a way of visually documenting the rich and complex conversations. The graphics were created by Paul Kuttner, co-chair of the new Utah node of URBAN.
