“Lift Us Up, Don’t Push Us Out! is a bold and exciting book that presents the stories we never hear — powerful stories of successful grassroots organizing in schools and communities across the nation led by parents, students, educators, and allies. The lessons we can learn from these inspiring activists and campaigns need to be spread far and wide.”

Karen Lewis, Chicago Teachers Union President

“Each one of the essays in “Lift Us Up” is a tour de force. You are captivated by the passion, the fury, the courage, the honesty, and the determination that is expressed so brilliantly by the writers, each who have found a way, by working arm-in-arm with others, to fight for educational justice for all children. I plan to assign this book to all of my students to bring the powerful and authentic voices of these parent and community movement leaders into my classroom.”

Karen Mapp, Senior Lecturer on Education at the Harvard School of Education

More about URBAN national https://urbanresearchnetwork.org/[urbanresearchnetwork.org]

This is an update on our URBAN Education Node activities.

Our website has all of the URBAN Education sessions. aera2018offsite.wordpress.com[aera2018offsite.wordpress.com]

Off-Site Session: Saturday, April 14, 1pm-3pm at City as School High School, 16 Clarkson St, #401, New York, NY 10014, NYC.

Our Off-Site is going to be amazing. We have two really strong human rights schools presenting their work on human rights and we have the Education Video Center presenting student PAR films. We also have CEJ, a local culturally responsive coalition of parents. This will be a chance to do some important coalition building across our regions and nodes. It will be a chance to re-envision our work for this next year.

Business Meeting

Our business meeting will be held in the lobby of the Grand Hyatt on Sunday, April 15 from 12:30pm-1:30pm. We will be unpacking the sessions from the conference and re-envisioning based on the momentum created at the Off-Site. Once we figure out where in the lobby we will be, we will put out signs. So look for the signs 🙂

Graduate Student Meeting

There will be a graduate student meeting on Sunday at the Grand Hyatt, from 2pm-3pm. If you are only coming for this, again, just look for the signs.

URBAN Social

For those interested in a social hour, we will do/organize something informal after the Business Meeting, so we will be in the lobby at the Grand Hyatt at 1:30pm and will take it from there.

All other sessions are on the site.

URBAN 2018 CONFERENCE: May 17-19, 2018 in Denver, Colorado https://urbanresearchnetwork.org/urban-2018-conference-may-17-19-2018-in-denver-colorado/ Tue, 13 Mar 2018 13:26:50 +0000 http://urbanresearchnetwork.org/?p=64780 Read more…]]> Place and Displacement – Towards Building and Sustaining Just Communities

The URBAN 2018 Conference will convene university scholars, community organizers, educators, activists and artists to connect, share stories, and develop practices and strategies for supporting communities in rapidly-changing cities and outlying areas across the US. Disruptions such as school closures, immigration enforcement, mass incarceration, gentrification, and environmental racism are cumulatively displacing low-income communities and communities of Color. The overlapping nature of these issues call for intersectional approaches that draw upon the expertise of youth and community organizers, educators, and university researchers working in equitable partnerships, consistent with the tradition of community-based participatory research.
The Conference brings together members of URBAN from across the country to discuss their efforts to build and sustain research partnerships that address these issues. The Conference will take place from May 17-19, 2018 in Denver, Colorado. (Critical Participatory Action Research Pre-Conference on Thursday, May 17).

For more information about this year’s Conference, please contact Vanessa Roberts, Conference Coordinator (vanessa.roberts@colorado.edu).

Registration: Please make sure to register for the conference by April 15th: https://edu.z2systems.com/np/clients/edu/eventRegistration.jsp?event=2623&

Travel & Lodging: The Denver International Airport is the closest airport and boasts numerous ground transportation options. Please refer to the URBAN Conference 2018_Lodging Options document for more information on the hotel discounts we have secured and recommended neighborhoods for those who might prefer room-share or alternative accommodations.
